The Haredi community (Ultra-Orthodox) represents approximately 12 percent of Israel’s population. The Haredi approach towards the state and its ambivalent involvement in Israeli society have been a topic for heated discussions in recent decades. The debate has reached a peaking point since the October 7 massacre and the war in Gaza.
This lecture will examine what happened to the Ultra-Orthodox community in the last year and a half, how its members experienced and reacted to the national trauma, why its leaders are opposing more than ever sending young Haredim to the army, and how secular and Modern-Orthodox Israelis perceive the Haredim today.
